I did some researching tonight, and learned that the Internet Archive does indeed have an API to check whether images are available. Their article about it is here: https://archive.org/help/wayback_api.php

This is much more scalable than manually checking, especially if the chance of success is low. But it could be a valuable resource for restoring a few more images.
