Follow up to bug #22, which brought us to reasonably-scalable message display with a GtkTreeView.

GTK4 provides GtkListView which seems to be the Right Thing for scalable message display, but we'll have to port to GTK4 first.

Lazy loading would be nice, but keeping scrollbars honest while lazy-loading content probably requires a custom widget and lots of work.
