AFAICT the whole SSL.Connection object supports STARTTLS etc. the way OpenSSL designed this: create a socket yourself, connect, do whatever plaintext negotiation you need, then hand it off to the TLS stack.
I guess it would be nice to have a client-server test to verify that this can in fact be done with M2Crypto.
