Conky updating while the screen is off causes considerably worse battery runtime as it forces the screen to get re-drawn, causing X to consume power, this can be mitigated by sending STOP to the conky process when the screen locks and CONT when it unlocks.
I've set pre/post hooks to run
pkill -STOP conky and
pkill -CONT conky respectively and got 30-45min extra runtime while listening to music
Implemented in https://git.sr.ht/~mil/sxmo-utils/commit/1371e394f821e39e122c06a25c45011ad4304372 and will be in next 1.3.2 release.
