I agree completely. Though
.tar
is a container type, so we'll have to add different deflation methods like BZip or GZip or LZMA. We can either add all of them, or include specific ones - or - use.zip

This wasn't meant as a form of compressing tophat games, but more as a way to better encapsulate them. I think compression is better accomplished by distributing the game in a compressed archive.
Oh yeah I see what you mean now, just using the .tar as a container. That makes sense.
Additionally, it'd be useful to have
tar.um
for any user specific needs.
